Revolutionary War FAQ
Welcome

Water View About 225 years ago the Lowcountry of South Carolina saw a lot of Revolutionary War activity. There were no major battles, but there were skirmishes, occupations and bridge-burnings and a lot of troop movements. Sometimes well-known Patriot figures such as Francis Marion and Colonel John Laurens were involved, but a lot of less-famous residents also did their duty.

Throughout the four counties that make up the Lowcountry there are a variety of Revolution-related locations--skirmish sites in Colleton County, British army bivouacs in Jasper County, graveyards in Hampton County, forts in Beaufort County and key river crossings in all four. Connecting them are modern highways and roads that follow the routes used by both American and British troops between 1799 and 1782.

Phase One of the trail is complete; frequent marker signs, with the trail logo, are along the way, following Loyalist Dr. Uzal Johnson and the route he and British soldiers followed on their march between Savannah and Charleston. You can read excerpts from his diary by going to the next page and following the link. There are information kiosks at four of the key locations along the route: Fort Balfour, Saltketcher's Bridge, McPherson's Plantation and the Battle of Coosawhatchie.

An archaeological assessment to locate the sites of the Fort and the Battle has been completed; read the report by following the "Archaeological Sites" link. A new project to identify the town site of Old Jacksonboro, which was the capital of South Carolina for a time during the Revolution, is about to get underway.

If you want to be part of our progress by helping the Lowcountry Revolutionary War Trail Foundation (a 501 (c) (3) corporation) continue to develop the trail, you can now become a "Pocotaligo Patriot" on-line. Start Exploring
